Here is a general summary of strategy and tactics that have been discussed or explained on WFM. An important thing to understand is that tactics refer to things that could be done to improve one’s immediate situation while strategy refers to things done to improve one’s situation over the long run. Strategy is presented first on this page, as it is important for intermediate players to understand the basics. Tactics come later, as they are often moves that counter the basics, and are often required to break the equilibrium that may form when players of a similar skill level become comfortable with their opponent’s style of play. A misuse of tactics as a substitute for strategy tends to be counter-productive in the long run, therefore it is fundamental that tactics remain a complement to a player’s skill set.
